Portsmouth/Middletown Rhode Island

Sakonnet Greenway trail is a 10 mile trail rated Easy which is located in Portsmouth and Middletown. Its an out and back trail that crosses over a plethora of different types of terrain from farms, woods, gravel, shells and passes by the Newport National Golf Club, which is huuuuuge i must say, The Glen, Newport Vineyards, Albro woods and much more. Its open dusk to dawn.

We did 6.17 miles in 2 hours. 3 miles in then turned around and 3 back.

Trail Map ( sorry its a bit blurry)

A Bit of Trail History-

The Aquidneck Land Trust (ATL) envisioned a nature trail through the Sakonnet Greenway beginning in 1992 and worked for over twenty years to acquire trail rights to build a 10-mile contiguous trail over private land. The trail was built in multiple phases: A 2.2-mile section of the Sakonnet Greenway Trail (SGT) was constructed around Newport National Golf Club in 2002. In 2007 and 2008, 2.7 miles of trails were added north of Bramans Lane in Portsmouth. An additional 4.8 miles of trails were added to the west of Mitchells Lane in 2012. The trails crosses ten properties, which are owned by seven private and public landowners.

The SGT is often used for hiking, running, dog walking, wildlife viewing, and horseback riding (see map for sections that allow horses). In the winter, users often snowshoe and cross-country ski. The trail runs along the Sakonnet Greenway habitat corridor, and passes through several natural community types.

We headed out with the goal in mind to just do as much as we can, we knew we werent going to do the whole 10 miles without dropping dead, lol keep in mind we are just getting back into hiking after what seemed like a billion years off the trails.

So like i said we did 6 miles, we walked 3 miles to the FOP 21 lodge in Middletown? I think its Middletown and the trekked back.

We started off at the Glen in Porstmouth , past the polo field, crossed over Sandy Point Ave and walked by the electric fence, for some odd reason I kept swaying towards the electric fence like I wanted to get shocked. hmmm

After avoiding getting electricuted on the fence we were off into the woods. let me tell you, the mud is no joke on this trail!! wow! At one point I heard my boot getting sucked in the mud , bottom of pants were covered in mud, but theres nothing wrong with a dirty hike, i kind of like that stuff.

Once we got into the woods we found 2 bridges, and if anybody knows me they know im fascinated with wooden bridges and footbridges, boardwalks.

We plan on going back and starting at the FOP lodge off Mitchells Ln and completing the rest of the trail. Hopefully the temps stay mild and we can do it soon.

This Greenway was a most interesting trail the variety of not only terrain but scenery. Yes it sure was muddy, I had mud cakes up almost to my knees I loved it. Nothing a little dawn cant get out lol. Came across a few horse friends along the way as well. This hike to date is our biggest accomplishment and looking forward to see how much we can trek when we pick up where we left off weather permitting of course. Happy trails to you too!
